Q&A with Carolina Mayorga of ‘The Miraculous Mass’

1. What should audiences expect for this weeks Soapbox performances?
My piece is an interactive performance in which the audience attending The Miraculous Mass will be part of a collective experience that according to The Miraculous Artist will turn their lives around forever!

2. How do you confront issues of identity and culture in your work, and specifically in your performances for this Thursday?
Most of my performances deal with my Hispanic background. The character I created, The Miraculous Artist is based on a Catholic figure and comments on the commercialization of spiritual values by turning a Mass Ceremony into an infomercial, a media marketing tool proved to be very effective among American audiences. I’ve used this format in other performances and video/pieces as well.

3. How does living and working in D.C. influence your work? Or has it?
I’ve always been interested in political and social issues, DC is the center for discussion of these issues so living, witnessing and sometimes participating in these discussions has definitely been a great source for art.

4. What are your current projects?
I’m planning a new performance, tentative title “The Janitor” playing with stereotypes related to my background.  Also preparing a series of photographic works dealing again with my Catholic upbringings, stay tuned for Virgin Carolina!
