Trust Us.

Each artist has developed an interactive performance relying on the viewer to complete their works. Paul will be hosting an assortment of “Contemporary Farewells” while Sam will be leading the viewer through a variety of interactions entitled “Trust me.” Afterwards, you are welcome to receive your mystery award, handmade by the artist as a thank you for your participation.

SOAPBOX is a monthly performance art series at Hillyer Art Space. As a platform for performance, SOAPBOX increases exposure to this important yet underrepresented art form in DC. Always free, $5 suggested donation.


Paul Shortt (b. 1981) received in BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institue in 2009. He has been in numerous group shows in Chicago, New York City, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Seattle. From 2009-2010 he directed a monthly, year-long series of performance art at the Fishtank Performance Studio in Kansas City, Missouri, called “The Paul Shortt Invitational Performances.” He has participated in the Charlotte Street Foundation residency program in Kansas City and spoken about his work at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Shortt currently is pursuing his MFA in New Media at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and expects to graduate in 2012.

Samuel Scharff (b. 1982) is originally from Orlando, FL with his BFA from Rollins College, 2005. He currently lives and works in Washington, DC, after recently graduating with his MFA from American University in 2012. He has shown locally in DC, VA, MD, and NYC. Recently he has helped to start a local house gallery entitled Delicious Spectacle which is a curatorial collective 1366 Quincy Street NW, DC. More information can be found at www.DeliciousSpectacle.com. Samuel is a project-based artist; his medium follows his idea. The main navigation for his ideas stems from a concern of awareness for both the viewer as well as a reaction to his artistic environment.
